Italian sayings

Italians have many lovely sayings about life (like any other established language) and each province has its own particular use. This section lists some of the more interesting Italian sayings, particularly from the Le Marche, Abruzzo and Puglia regions.

Send me your Italian saying! The only conditions are that you should provide an English translation and not use bad language. If you wish me to acknowledge you, please tell me what format I should use, e.g., "Mr Biaconi, Firenze", "D.ressa Claudia Campia" etc. If you wish I can show your e mail although I don't recommend it since you will receive spam from spambots who trawl the internet looking for addresses. However, do send your e mail if you would like me to acknowledge it - I will only publish it if I have your permission.

I am indebted to Daniela from Puglia for this saying:

  • "sci n'ama sci sciamn, sci non n'ama sci, non ne sciam scenn" = it means simply if we have to go, let's go, if we don't have to go, let's stay. It's a call to action.
