The Basilica di San Nicola, Tolentino, Le Marche, is well worth a visit. Honouring the local saint who was born in Sant'Angelo in Pontano, the present building was begun in the tenth century. Apart from the stunning roof, the highlight of the church are the medieval stuccoes, depicting the life of Nicola. Apart from the usual collection of angels, there are musicians and dancers. The basilica is also home to an exhibition dedicated to San Nicola, including a fascinating set of models based around his life. There is also a permanent crib (Praesepe) exhibition, illustrating a tradition in Italy where cribs showing the birth of Jesus are represented with a wide variety of artistic interpretations and materials. | ||||||
