The village pictured below is Rocca di Mezzo, Abruzzo. In summer this pastoral scene is typical but in winter this village is frequently cut off by snow.

Abruzzo

Abruzzo is a wonderful region, full of diverse landscape and wonderful people. While it is situated near the middle of Italy, it is considered part of the south and thus a disadvantaged area. The principal city is L'Aquila, a location that made the news headlines in 2009 for suffering a massive earthquake. Most of mainland Italy sits on major fault lines, and earthquakes (terremoto) are not uncommon.

The 2016-17 earthquakes damaged an area of central Abruzzo, although the epicentures were further north. At the time of writing (2023), L'Aquila still needs major investment and reconstruction is only happening very slowly.
