Typical of the fortified Italian citadella, Rocca di Mezzo lies high in the Abruzzo section of the Appenines. In winter this area is frequently cut off by heavy snowfalls - we sometimes forget that parts of the south of Italy suffer from persistent harsh weather in winter (and these parts are about 150k from the warming influence of the Adriatic Sea).
